Did you know that over 50% of the human cortex processes visual information? That’s why vision boards are such powerful tools for manifesting our dreams!

For many of us, visual imagination is a key process we use to learn and understand the world. Many people rely more on their visual system than their auditory(sounds) or kinesthetic (feelings) systems.

But for some reason, goals often only get written down, which is rather auditory than visual. However, a picture says more than 1000 words and a vision board can also be much more powerful than a few words written down.

Now a vision board may sound fancy but it is simply a visual representation of your goals and vision.

That’s why it is also quite easy to make one. Of course, there are many different ways to do it, and I try to show you some of the most effective ones in this short tutorial on how to create your vision board. The key here is to focus on a how we can get a high quality vision board in the least amount of time.

Now, even though the vision board is, in its essence, quite plain, its impact can be profound. Once you have clarified what you want in life and written down some goals or visions. You want to think about them all the time; they need to be upfront, in your brain and activated in your subconscious so progress comes naturally. A vision board helps you do exactly that.

Now you have a way to connect to your goals through a visual way, evoking strong emotions every time you look at it. This will be helping you to be motivated and stay on track.

Now, lets get started in less than one hour, you can have your own fully customized vision boards that connects you right to your purpose and dreams.

What Is a Vision Board and Why Does It Work?

I have heard of vision boards ages ago, but for a long time I did never make my own. I always thought, that I have my goals written down I do not need more. But, I was just missing a simple boost in the availability of my goals that needed no time to complete.

Once you clarify your goals, you need to make them really salient. This is just a fancy way of saying that you need to think about your goals automatically all the time. You want to know what is important for your life right now, whatever you are doing, whatever state you are in.

You can achieve this in many different ways: talk about your goals, write them down, visualize them, create a vision board, and many more. The thing why a vision board is so powerful is that you can save it on your desktop or print it and put it on a wall, and then every time you look at it, you feel a connection to your goals. It only takes a few seconds because we are so fast in interpreting pictures.

Researchers found similar insights. Visual information is much more potent in activating the Reticular Activating System, short RAS. The RAS is the filter of your brain; it tells it which information it perceives is important and which is not. Your vision board will activate this RAS, and thus, it will actively search for more ways to achieve your goals.

You’ve got options when it comes to types of vision boards. The traditional physical vision board uses a bulletin board or poster board where you arrange magazine images and inspiring quotes. If you want to go the old-school way, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this.

But let’s be real. We live in a digital age, and making a digital vision board is much more effective and has many advantages. That’s why, in this post, we will focus on digital vision boards, but you can apply almost everything to the creation of a digital vision board.

What makes vision boards particularly effective is their ability to combine both logic and emotion. We often don’t even think about how reaching our goals would look like, creating your vision board makes you have to envision your dreams. You need to come up with ideas for how it will look. This is maybe a new way to look at some of your goals and will help you to clarify what it is that you really want.

Creating a vision board will be even more effective if you don’t even know what exactly are your goals right now. Then we will do a whole process of finding out what you want from life and then turning it into a visual representation you can look at every time you need to be remembered what truly matters to you.

Now, let’s get started creating your personal vision board.

Defining Your Vision

Obviously, it makes no sense to start working on your vision board if you do not yet have a clear vision of your future.

We will start there. Even if you already have a clear vision, this section can teach you a lot, and you may update parts of it or maybe you just need to clarify some things here and there.

First, we need to understand the difference between a vision and a goal. A vision is much more broad, it is not as specific as a goal. The vision is going to be your ultimate goal, the “end ” of the journey; a goal is just one step towards this vision.

Now, for the vision board, we want to focus (as the name suggests) on your vision. This means we are going to dream.

I love doing this. You are going to spend some time in your ideal life in the future. This is how I like to do this: First, I am dividing my life into categories. I will make personal and professional categories, because those two are often very different.

For my personal categories, I will look at my life and ask myself: “What are the most important areas of my personal life where I am committed to grow and expand?” This is about finding the areas in your life that have to grow no matter what. We all have parts of our life that are more important and parts that are less important. This dividing is crucial because it gives you the clarity of knowing where you need to focus most of your attention.

Everyone will have categories like personal fitness/health or friends/family, but some might be more unique to you. Aim for about 5 to 12 categories, depending on your lifestyle. It does not matter what you want to focus on as long as you are committed to putting in the work to improve those parts of your life.

Repeat the same process for your professional goals, and you have your categories of never-ending improvement. As always, they are not set in stone, especially the professional categories prone to change. It just has to fit your life today. Your professional categories might be more “random” than your personal ones. This really depends on your job. If you own a company, you might want to focus on customer satisfaction and delegating your work. If you are 18 and studying, you might want to get good grades and put work into a side project.

Now, obviously, you should start setting goals in all those categories to ensure your progress, but this is not what we are trying to accomplish here. A vision board is a bit like visualizing. We aim for the ultimate outcome to invoke the strongest emotions.

This is exactly what you have to do right now, but first. Get into a great state, maybe stretch a little, and jump around until you feel great. It is key that you feel strong and energized when you are doing this exercise. Then, ask yourself about every category you choose, how your life would look if you achieved that vision completely. Try to envision it, feel it, and hear it. We want to get a feel for it so, we know what kind of pictures we are going to look after in the creation of the vision board.

You might be thinking, “But what if I’m not sure about my long-term vision?” That’s totally normal! One exercise that’s been super helpful for me is what I call the “perfect day” visualization. Imagine your ideal day five years from now – what time do you wake up? What kind of work are you doing? Who are you spending time with? This helps create a more concrete visual representation of your future goals.

There is no right and wrong here, this is about connecting to your future. About having something to work towards. If you manage to hold a strong connections to those dreams, putting in the work will be so much easier.

Also, for all your categories, you should always focus on who you want to be in this category rather than what you are going to have. If you connect your vision to your identity, it will be a much stronger connection than anything else.

The inner work of aligning goals with your authentic self is probably the most challenging part. I’ve seen too many vision boards filled with images of luxury cars and massive houses simply because that’s what society tells us success looks like. Your vision board needs to reflect YOUR definition of success, not anyone else’s ideal life.

Because only what really matters to you will be able to create the drive and motivation you need to push through hard work and fulfill your goals.

I hope that by the end of this process, you have a clear sense of the areas of your life that you are committed to growing and improving, no matter what. And you also know what you ultimate outcome in all of those areas is. In other words you know what you are working towards. I hope that you were able to envision a future that got you emotional and excited to embark on your journey.

Essential Supplies for Creating Your Vision Board

Let me start by quickly covering the basics of physical vision boards before diving into the digital approach, which is my go-to method. For a traditional vision board, you really just need a poster board or bulletin board, some old magazines, glue sticks, and scissors. And quite some time. That’s it!

But here’s the thing – while physical vision boards are great, I’ve found that digital vision boards offer so much more flexibility for our modern lifestyle. And if you absolutely want a physical version of your board, you can order a printout and get the best of both words.

The process of creating your vision board is quite simple. You basically look for a minimum of one picture for every one of your categories of improvement that presents your ultimate vision. This can be the vision itself or something that is linked to the vision. Maybe you show a huge bank account that shows your financial freedom, maybe you show the car that you could buy if you had the money or it is a picture of someone doing exactly what you want to be doing in the future.

The key is to find pictures that evoke certain emotions in you. So if the car speaks more to you, take the car. Every person has his unique leverage points that will lead to stronger emotions. So, use the images that work for you. Still, i found that pictures linked to what you are going to do and who you are going to be will generyl be stronger. For me, those are about 90% of my board.

Remember, this is your poster, yours only, so whatever picture and vision you choose, it has to resonate with you. You only. I don’t want you to spend one second thinking about what others would say or even think about your poster.

Ok, then, let’s move on and discuss what you need for the digital board.

Again, it is simple: You need at least one source of images and a tool to arrange all the images together.

My personal favorite is still Canva. It combines everything you need. You can perfectly arrange all the pictures, and you can choose the size and resolution so that it fits your device of choice. They even have their own images you can use, which are quite good. There are AI features, and you can write on stuff and change colors, etc. It is basically an all-in-one package that combines everything you need to create your vision board.

However, you can use whatever you want; since this is yours, you can simply go to Google Images and search there. To arrange it, you can use Word, Google Docs, or whatever you like. I have seen people create their vision boards on the Notepad.

Of course you can also use any other image source like Unsplash or Pexels. I used different ones until i found the right picture for me.

In the End there is no right and wrong when it comes to the essentials your are going to use. All that you wanna do is end up with an arrangement of pictures that represent your visions. So use whatever is right for you. There are just more and less time-consuming approaches.

Step-by-Step Vision Board Creation Process

Before starting out with your vision board, take some time to connect it with your vision. This is not a process we want to hurry to; think about your ideal future. Feel it, enjoy it. Look that your mind is in a great place before we start.

I am now walking to the process as simple as possible so you can apply it to the way that you choose to create your vision board. If you have not. When would now be a good time to do it?

If you are creating a digital vision board and you plan to use it as your wallpaper, then it is best to see that the board you create matches the ratio of your screen. The ratio you will find in the settings on your laptop; if you use a monitor, google quickly. I use an ultrawide monitor that uses a ratio of 3340 *1440. On Canva, you can set the resolution when you create your design. (sadly, to change it afterward, you need the premium version)

Before we start searching for pictures, consider how many images will fit on your board and how much space you are committed to each dream. Maybe you need only one picture for finance, but for your relationship, you need two or three to tell the whole story of what you are wishing for. Also, think about the importance of every category of improvement when you are deciding on the space.

Don’t worry. This only needs to be a rough estimation. (it will most likely turn out completely different than you imagined)

Once you know approximately how many pictures will fit your board, we can start with the creation.

I suggest that you first look for some images and then start to arrange them. Now the process starts, start searching for your images on any site you know. I started with Canva and then moved on to Google Images and then to some other websites. Pinterest is great for inspiration.

Once you have found a picture that fits your vision and activates some emotions, you can download it. Look that you get the highest resolution you can get, it will look better in the end. Then copy it into your vision board and go on.

You can start arranging some of your pictures when you have them ready. There is no science to that. I would cluster images of the same vision together, but other than that, try around until it matches. Be experimenting around, change sizes, and maybe crop images.

Then, add more images and arrange further until your board is complete. Easy.

Before you start, keep one thing in mind: less is more. If you can define one part of your vision with only one picture, then do not use two. In the end, you also want your vision board to be easy to read. The fewer pictures you have on your board, the faster you will be able to look at them all and get that emotional boost you are looking for.

Now, what you can do is completely optional, and you should not overdo it. It is to add some inspiring words to the image. Or if an image may be ambiguous, add a word to clarify. Keep this simple because the pictures still carry the emotions.

Remember, the best life vision boards aren’t just beautiful – they’re functional tools that help manifest your dreams into reality. Take your time with the process, be intentional with your choices, and don’t be afraid to make adjustments as you grow. Your vision board should evolve just like you do, supporting your journey toward turning those dreams into your daily reality.

How to Use Your Vision Board Effectively

Making the board is just the beginning. The real magic happens in how you use it to stay focused on your goals every single day. Let me share some game-changing tips I’ve discovered about making vision boards actually work.

First up, let’s talk about placement. If you’re using a digital vision board like I do, make it unavoidable! Set it as your desktop background, your phone’s lock screen, or even as the homepage on your browser. The more you see it, the more you will be reminded what your dreams are and will move them more into focus.

There are many ways to use a vision board. In the end, you want it to help you think about your goals and visions all the time.

For example: spend the first five minutes of your morning really looking at your vision board. Not just a quick glance but really engaging with those visual representations of your dreams. Maybe even take it further and start visualizing them as well.

But it has not been that for you; I would at least once a week really take the time to look at your vision board and imagine how your life would be if all those pictures were reality for you.

I really think that vision boards are a great tool, but letting them stand alone they can not fulfill their full potential. It is because they are a vision board. And until you are not going to transform your vision into actionable steps. You are not going to have great results.

If you however combine the two and create goals for every vision you have. Then, the vision board will help you, giving you the emotional juice to push through hard work. It wont do the work for you but it can be a game change providing you with a little extra motivation and keeping the end goal clear in view.

Here’s a mistake I see people make all the time – they create their vision board and then expect things to happen magically. Reality check: vision boards work when they inspire action! I encourage keeping a simple progress tracker alongside your board. Every time you take a step toward one of your goals, note it down. These small wins really add up!

The whole point of having a vision board is to increase motivation and maintain clear direction. But here’s something interesting I’ve noticed – sometimes, what we think we want changes as we grow. That’s why I love digital boards; you can easily crop images, add new inspiring words, or completely redesign sections as your dreams evolve.

The bottom line? Your vision board is a tool, and like any tool, its effectiveness depends on how you use it. Stay consistent with your visualization practice, be willing to adapt as you grow, and always keep taking those small steps toward your dreams.

That’s how vision boards really work to transform your reality.

Conclusion:

Now, you should have all the knowledge you have to create a vision board.

Remember these three key things: place your vision board where you’ll see it daily, let the images truly represent YOUR dreams (not someone else’s), and combine your visual inspiration with actionable steps.

A vision board alone won’t manifest your dreams – but paired with consistent action, it’s a powerful tool for staying focused on your goals. Your brain processes visual information incredibly effectively, making your vision board a perfect daily reminder of where you’re headed.

If you need any vision board ideas, then go to Google or Pinterest and search for an inspiration board.

Ready to transform your dreams into reality? Start creating your vision board today. Your future self will thank you.

Did you know that only about 6% of people stick to their New Year’s resolutions for more than one year?

Ouch! That’s a pretty sobering statistic. But here’s the thing – it’s not because we’re all lazy or lack willpower. More often than not, it’s because we’re just setting crappy goals and are making some crucial goal-setting mistakes without even realizing it.

I’ve been there, done that, and learned the hard way. But I have learned a lot along the way.

In this article, we’ll dive into the top 7+ goal setting mistakes that might be holding you back from achieving your dreams. By the end, you’ll be armed with the knowledge to sidestep these pitfalls and supercharge your success rate. Let’s get started on your journey to becoming a goal-crushing machine!

1. Setting Vague or Unclear Goals

I don’t wanna know how many people say that they want to get into shape as their New Year resolution and how many of those actually make it happen.

Of course, people rarely follow through on any of their New Year resolutions.

This has many reasons, one of them is that people set too many vague goals. What does getting in shape even mean? You will never know when you have reached your goal and you have no way of measuring your progress.

Here’s the deal: vagueness is a motivation killer.

If you have a clear defined goal, you know exactly when you are making progress and then you will most likely be motivated to do even more. You can get into a positive feedback loop and it gets easier and easier the farther you get.

Sadly, This is impossible if you do no know where you are on the way to your goal.

Let me give you a real-life example. “Read more books” is a classic vague goal. Sounds great, right? But it’s about as helpful as a chocolate teapot. Compare that to “Read one non-fiction book per month and write a one-page summary.”

You see this is an important topic for me. I know dreaming about your future and creating a nice vision are great things. But when it comes to setting goals. You have to be specific or you are basically lost from the start.

Now, I’m not saying it’s easy to make this switch. However, following some guidelines is a simple process to transform every vague goal or vision into a specific goal with a clear path.

Use numbers whenever possible. Whether it’s pounds lost, dollars saved, or books read, quantify your goal.

Set a deadline. Open-ended goals are just wishes in disguise. Give yourself a realistic timeframe to light a fire under your butt.

Break it down into actionable steps. What exactly do you need to do each day or week to reach your goal?

Make it measurable. Ask yourself: “How will I know when I’ve achieved this?” Here you can get creative. When you are talking about weight, it is easy, but in a relationship, it is more difficult. Just find metrics that tell you that you’re on track.

Vague goals have their place too. I have visions that are not very specific. They are bright and give me emotional juice. They motivate me. But attached to those visions I have clear goals. For the short and for the long term.

They ensure that I make the progress in the time that I want.

2. Overlooking the Power of Writing Down Your Goals

I hope this is a no-brainer for most of you. If you do not take 5 minutes to write down your goals, how do you want to achieve any of them? As long as they are only in your head, they will never be clear and only some vague dream. (which we just discussed is baaaad)

If you, for some reason, are not convinced that writing down your goals is a must, let me show you why you should:

So, here’s the deal: there’s science behind why putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) makes your goals more likely to happen. It is all about how our brains process information. When we write something down, we activate a massive part of our brains.

You see, every letter is an exact movement that is represented in our brains; it involves coordination, thinking, planning, and language processing.

The more you activate your brain the more likely you will remember something. That is part of what we want. We want our goals to be embedded in our subconscious mind. We want them to become second nature to us. Writing them down is the first and most crucial step on this process.

I write every important decision or thought I have down. I think much more clear and structured when I write something down. When I just think about something it stays kind of vague.

Now, I am kind of old school. I like to write my goals down with pen and paper. Doing it on your phone or computer works as well. It is clearly better than not writing it down. But if you are looking for the best results, then handwriting is still king. (Pen on tablet works as well).

Now there are countless ways of how to structure your goals and how to write them down. Too many to dive into right now.

I personally have a Journal where I have a structured way of writing them down, creating projects for each goal, and measuring my progress. I am using the journal and method by Tony Robbins.

However, you do it. Write them down.

Now, here’s the important part: writing down your goals is just the first step. You gotta review and update them regularly. (more on that later) This is another reason why it is so important that you write them down. You want to be able to review them, to update them, and to assess how you are doing.

I take one hour every Sunday morning to look at my goals and plan the next week accordingly. The more regular you do it the better it is going to be.

I sincerely hope that from now on you are going to write down all of your goals and of course that you may achieve many more this way.

3. Setting Too Many Goals at Once

I am a huge fan of simplicity. I realized that the more I wanted, the less I got. What I mean by that is that I came to believe that many of us overcomplicate our lives. We think we need to have all those things, go on all those trips, and have all those experiences.

When in reality you can be happy with very little if it fits what you need. The more useless stuff you cut from your life the more time you have to focus on what really matters.

I don’t say you should limit yourself in your dreams. NO, I think you should aim big. But, still, try to focus on what really matters to you.

The more you are able to narrow down what you want and need. The simpler your life gets the easier it will be to achieve the goals you set.

Let’s try a thought experiment. If you only had one goal (not suggesting that) and the only thing you did in your life was work towards this goal, let’s, for example, take an athlete or a football player. If he only trained every day with no party, laser focus, and no distractions, you may add some natural talent. What are the chances he is going to be a great player?

He will be amazing there is no way around it.

That is the power of focus. What you focus on in your life will grow. Focus directs the energy that you give. The fewer things you focus on, the more energy they get and the faster they will grow.

Here’s the thing about setting too many goals at once: it’s like trying to juggle while riding a unicycle. On fire. Underwater. Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but you get the point. Our brains just aren’t wired to focus on a million things at the same time. It’s cognitive overload, plain and simple.

So, how do you avoid this common goal-setting mistake? It all comes down to prioritization. You’ve got to get ruthless about deciding what truly matters to you right now. I found it helpful to ask myself, “If I could only achieve one thing this year, what would make the biggest positive impact on my life?” That question can change a lot. Maybe look at it from that perspective.

I don’t want you to cut back on your dreams or vision. Just look at it form a different perspective: Think how you could live your dream life with the fewest outcomes possible. Behind ever dream there are emotions. Ask yourself: “What are the key things that have to happen for me to feel this way in this area of your life?”.

The key to remember here is that achieving a few real, meaningful goals will probably fulfill you way more than achieving many minor/unimportant ones.

But I get it. Narrowing down your goals can be tough. We all have dreams, and it feels like we’re giving up on them if we don’t pursue them all right now. Some goals can wait, and some have high priority.

Prioritizing is a massive skill where everyone has room for improvement. But it gives you clarity and clarity is power.

Now what is a good number. We humans are really good at remembering chunks of three. Now either you start with only three goals and have ultimate clarity and you focus on those. Or if your life is a little more complicated, then divide your life into three areas. Like relationships, personal goals, and professional and set three goals in each category. Nine is the highest I would go right now.

A last rule of thumb is when you have problems remembering all your goals. Then they’re too many. You want them to be present at all times. So that you don’t even have to think about them and you naturally pursue them actively. (more of that later)

4. Failing to Set Deadlines or Timelines

Okay, this is a tricky one.

How much time do you give yourself to hunt your goals, or do you even want to set deadlines?

There are reasons that go against this for example it creates extra stress and what do you do if you miss your deadline, just give it up? For some dreams it is very hard to come up with a deadline, and sometimes you have no clue how much time is needed for obtaining this goal.

However, the benefits outweigh the downsides by far.

Having timelines creates a necessity to act now. Deams can be pushed into the future, but if you have a deadline, you know that you need to get your ass to work right now.

The second upside is that once you set a deadline you can begin to plan. If you know for example that you want to have two million on the side to buy a house with the age of 35. Then you can calculate exactly how much you need to invest and what return you have to get to have those two million on time.

That’s powerfull. You know when you are on or off track and when to readjust or when to continue like this.

Now, look at the opposite. When you have a goal without a deadline, you have no plan, so you do not know whether you are doing good. This means the probability you reach your goal in a desired timeframe decreases dramatically.

Another point to keep in mind is that if you defined waypoint you can celebrate your success every time you reach one. If that is done right you can create a lot more motivation through the positive feeling acossated with working towards your checkpoint.

Here’s the thing about open-ended goals: they’re like an all-you-can-eat buffet for procrastination. Without a deadline, it’s way too easy to push things off. “I’ll do it tomorrow” becomes your mantra, and before you know it, you’re no closer to achieving your goals than when you started.

So, how do we fix this? It’s all about setting realistic and motivating deadlines. Now, I’m not saying you should set a deadline for next week to write that novel (unless you’re some kind of literary superhero). But giving yourself a reasonable timeframe can light a fire under you.

Now, let’s talk about staying accountable to your timelines. This can be tricky, especially if you’re a master of self-deception like I used to be. A helpful technique is to include other persons who can hold you accountable.

It is crucial that you check in regularly. Schedule regular check-ins so you do not miss them and you regularly reassess your progress.

Oh, and here’s a pro tip: build some buffer time into your deadlines. Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs when you least expect them. By giving yourself a little wiggle room, you’re less likely to get derailed by unexpected setbacks.

Remember, the point of setting time-bound goals isn’t to stress yourself out. It’s about creating a clear path to achieve your goals.

5. Neglecting to Create a Solid Action Plan

This is the point where most fail. But it is the most crucial one. A goal without a plan is just a dream and the probability of turning it into reality is relatively small.

Only when you examine your goals and devise a clear plan for achieving them by your deadline you are on the winning track.

This is also the point where I struggle the most. Because until this point the process is a lot of fun for me. Now the work starts and if you can’t even do this part of the work you have no chance to succeed.

On the other side, if you got a perfect plan on how you want to reach your goal you are already half way there. Because you know exactly what to do, when to do, and how much effort/time is needed to achieve your goals.

There’s a big difference between a goal and a plan. A goal is your destination, but a plan? That’s your roadmap. Without it, you’re just wandering around, hoping to stumble upon success.

So, how do we turn those lofty goals into achievable action plans? It starts with breaking things down into smaller, actionable tasks. Depending on your goal, there are smaller outcomes that all need to come together until your final goal is reached.

For example, if you want to get in shape, you need a diet and exercise plan. Now, you must ask yourself what you need to do to achieve those outcomes. Maybe you need to consult a coach first or read on the internet.

Creating a roadmap for your objectives is like plotting a course for a long journey. You need to know where you’re starting from, where you want to end up, and all the steps in between.

Now, I’m not saying you need to plan out every single minute detail. That’s a sure way to overwhelm yourself. But having a general outline can make a world of difference.

There are tons of tools and techniques out there for effective action planning. Personally, I use Tony Robbins’s RPM method where you create a Results-focused, Purpose-driven, Massive Action Plan.

The magic questions of this approach are:

What do I want?/What is my goal/outcome?

Why do I want it? /What does this goal do for my life?

“What do I have to do to reach the outcome I want?

Using this technique, I create a step-by-step plan first for the next year; then I use the same questions to plan my months and, weeks, and days. It allows me to have a plan but to always have my outcome and purpose in mind. This is much more rewarding than just thinking about what you have to do.

I highly encourage you to use time-blocking. This is where you actually schedule specific times in your calendar for working on your goals. Having regular timeslots for different goals is the best way to ensure that you spend enough time working on those goals.

Creating an action plan isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. So don’t get too hung up on making the “perfect” plan. Start with something simple, and refine it as you go along. The most important thing is to have a plan that works for you and keeps you moving toward your goals.

You are going to update this plan often, so don’t overcomplicate it. Just get a plan and start working on it.

6. Failing to Anticipate Obstacles and Setbacks

I can’t tell you how many goals I have missed because I did not plan for potential obstacles.

Here’s the deal: planning for challenges isn’t just important. It’s absolutely crucial to goal success. It’s like packing an umbrella for a picnic. Sure, you hope for sunshine, but you’ll be glad you’ve got it if the sky opens up.

No matter how well you are doing, there will always be something going wrong. There are three kinds of people who react differently when facing a major challenge in pursuing their goals. The first give up, the second try to find a way to move around this obstacle and still thrive, but there is also a third group: the ones who anticipated this going wrong and either found a way to prevent it or already have a plan in mind to use this to their advantage and don’t get slowed down at all.

Now you can decide which group you want to be in.

So, what are some common obstacles in goal pursuit? Well, there’s the classic time crunch. We all have the same 24 hours in a day, and sometimes it feels like there’s just not enough to go around.
Then there’s the motivation slump – you know, when Netflix starts looking way more appealing than working on your goals.
And let’s not forget about unexpected life events that can throw a wrench in your plans.

Overcoming these obstacles isn’t about brute force. It’s about being smart and prepared. For example, to avoid the time trap, you need to plan ahead. I always try to plan my whole week according to my goals so I spend enough time on either one of them. Without a plan, it is so easy to spend way too much time on one area without realizing it.

The way that has worked best for me is this one:

Take some time, get into a good state first, breathe deeply, stretch yourself get active. Then while standing imagine your goal. Start with the outcome you like, and then start imagining your way there, what you will be doing, and what work you are going to put in. Visualize how you do the work and then ask yourself the simple question: What could go wrong here? What challenges could I face? And then imagine yourself overcoming those.

Then, write down your main insights. Brainstorm even more; you know yourself, and you know your life. How can you or life get in your way?

Then first try to implement systems that prevent those setbacks from happening. An easy example is when you try to loose weight and you know you have a sweet tooth, eliminate all sweets from your house so you can’t eat sweets late at night and maybe even tell your spouse to prevent you from ordering desert.

It is about making it easier to follow through. Everyone can achieve their goals when all goes as planned. It is those moments when you are challenged to fail that make the difference.

If you did what you can to prevent setbacks, then come up with plans on what to do if shit happens. One L does not mean you have to give up. Have systems in place to get you right back on track. Get creative. My magic question is, “What is (or could be) great about this?”. Maybe you know that if your business partner betrays you, there is another person who would be happy to make deals with you.

The more you plan for challenges the easier it is going to be. If you have clear rules and scripts on what you do when X happens you, can spend much more time doing and acting instead of thinking about solutions.

So, next time you’re setting a goal, take off those rose-colored glasses and get real about potential obstacles. Plan for them, prepare for them, but don’t let them scare you off. With the right mindset and strategies in place, you can navigate any roadblock that comes your way.

Also, you need to regularly review progress and keep on looking for possible obstacles.

Never forget, it is exactly those challenges that make it worth, that add value to what you are doing. The harder it gets, the bigger the reward, but we can be prepared for when it gets hard.

7. Neglecting to Celebrate Small Wins

That one is a bit a personal one for me. It was the one missing link that prevented me from overcoming some serious challenges in my life and it is something I see so many not doing and it is so sad.

You may think I am overreacting here, and everyone celebrates his wins. Why do I need to mention it? The key here is small wins. Those are often neglected, and people tend to focus much more on small losses.

I’ll tell you how it was for me so you can grasp what it meant for me. I think we humans are naturally wired to look for what is wrong. This is part of our survival instinct; what is wrong might kill us, so we better look out for it. However, in current times, survival is not what we are looking for.

My challenge was that I tried to make big changes in my life, and those did not happen from one day to the other. So, there were things that I improved every day and others that I still needed to work on (like for everyone). But at the end of the day, I tended to focus much more on what did not work out, and I completely missed that I actually spent the biggest part of the day progressing.

I tough to be stuck, but I actually made huge progress. And one day I started a new practice. Every evening I would look back at my day and ask myself. “Why was this a great day?”, “What did I do right today?”, “Why can I be proud of myself?”.

(You see that I think questions have lots of power)

That made a huge difference for me, and so it can be for you. All of a sudden, I went to sleep with feelings of accomplishment and woke up strong and motivated. Through the days, I started to see all that I was doing right, and they gave me credit for it.

My overall mode went from a 6 to a 11, now working hard was fun. Yea that small change made such a big difference. Celebrating all wins like a kid is such a huge thing. I think many don’t do that. You might feel silly but that is the point. Be silly enjoy it have fun.

It is easy to build on wins and hard to build on L’s. So focus on the wins and you got much more to build on.

Here’s the thing: acknowledging progress isn’t just about giving yourself a pat on the back (although that’s nice too). It’s got some serious psychological benefits. When we celebrate small wins, our brains get a nice little dose of dopamine. It’s like a mini reward system that keeps us motivated and hungry for more.

There is no right strategy here. You know how to celebrate. Just do it. Maybe even write it down. I have stated a success journal that keeps me going. But do whatever you want to do jut allow yourself to feel good about all of your wins, it does not matter how small they were.

Obviously, you can overdo it. You don’t want to get lazy. Acknowledge that you always need to improve as well. See it like, I want to improve this tomorrow and less in the light of I fucked up today.

And hey, if you’re struggling to find things to celebrate, try zooming in a bit. Did you stick to your new habit for a whole week? Celebrate it. Did you push through on a day when you really didn’t feel like it? That’s worth acknowledging, too. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress worth celebrating.

Use the power of positive reinforcement to your advantage.

8. Forgetting to Regularly Review and Adjust Your Goals

Everyone knows that you should review your goals regularly. I mean life circumstances change rapidly so your goals should adapt. Or you made progress and you need to readjust your goal.

Still, I think that most people do this way too little and without a clear system.

So, how do we stay on top of our goals? It’s all about regular review sessions. Think of them as check-ups for your goals. I’ve found that setting aside time every month to review my goals works wonders.

During these review sessions, I ask myself some tough questions. Am I making progress? If not, why? Is this goal still important to me? Do I need to adjust my approach? It’s like being your own personal goal coach.

Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Sometimes, you might realize that a goal no longer serves you. And you know what? That’s okay! There’s no shame in modifying or even abandoning a goal if it’s not aligning with your life anymore.

This is where flexibility comes in. Having a growth mindset means being open to change and seeing challenges as opportunities to learn. It’s not about rigidly sticking to a goal just because you set it. It’s about being adaptable and willing to pivot when necessary.

Try to categorize your goals. For some goals it will be easy you realize that you are on track and you only need to continue this way. However, there is always the problem of time. Maybe your realize that you need to spend more time on one goal and take this time from a goal which is working great. And then there are the ones that you can quit. Or some that are on hold. Make up a categorization that works for you.

Try to decide where you need to spend more time or less time, where you need to change your approach, and then try to stick to it until your next review progress.

And hey, if you find yourself resistant to changing your goals, ask yourself why. Is it because the goal is truly important to you? Or is it because you’re afraid of feeling like you’ve given up? Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is to let go of a goal that’s no longer serving you and redirect that energy toward something that truly lights you up.

So, set reminders for regular goal review sessions. Be honest with yourself about your progress and your changing circumstances. Most importantly, be kind to yourself through this process. After all, the whole point of setting goals is to create a life you love, not to stress yourself out!

Conclusion

Whew! We’ve just navigated through the treacherous waters of goal-setting mistakes, and I hope you’re feeling more confident about charting your course to success. Nobody’s perfect – we all make mistakes. But by being aware of these common pitfalls, you’re already leagues ahead of most people.

The key is to start implementing these lessons right away.

Why not take a moment now to review your current goals? Are they specific, measurable, and truly aligned with your values? Do you have a solid action plan in place? Small tweaks can lead to massive results!

As the great Tony Robbins once said, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” So go ahead, make your goals visible, avoid these mistakes, and watch as your dreams transform into reality. You’ve got this! And hey, if you found this article helpful, why not share it with a friend who could use a goal-setting boost? Together, let’s make 2024 the year of achieved goals and smashed records!

Did you know that people who write down their goals are up to 42% more likely to achieve them?

When you think about it that is a crazy statistic.

Just think about it: If you take some time, sit down, and write down what you want to achieve and have in your life, then you increase your chances by almost 50%.

There are many different beliefs, strategies, and techniques regarding goal setting. Everyone has a different opinion on how to do it, which can be overwhelming.

Understanding SMART Goals: The Classic Approach

The SMART goal-setting process is a framework that is widely used because of its effectiveness and simplicity. I am sure most of you have heared it before.

The origin of this method goes back to a paper published in 1981 by George T. Doran. The fact that it is still around means the concept has shown its utility in the past 40 years.

So, how can you use the SMART goal-setting process? Let me break it down for you; SMART is an acronym and stands for five rules that you should always keep in mind when you set any goal:

Any goal you set should be…

S – Specific: You want your goals to be as specific as possible. The more specific you get, the easier it will be to track your progress and reward yourself along the way. So, instead of just getting in shape, you may want to write, losing X pounds of fat or gaining X pounds of muscle.

M – Measurable: Building on the same principle as to be specific, a goal should be objectively measurable. Your goal might be highly specific, but if you can not measure the progress, that does not help you, but if your goal is specific and measurable, then you know exactly if you’re on track or not.

A – Achievable: A SMART goal is not a dream; it is within reach for you to achieve it if you adopt the right strategies and make the right choices. Keep in mind that you can always update your goal once you progress.

R – Relevant: If you do not really care about your goal, chances are low that you will achieve it. If you care, however, it can activate strong emotions that make you try your best.

T – Time-bound: Give yourself a deadline. I, for example, told myself that by the end of 2023, I would have my own business, and so I did. You want to create some form of urgency.

Now, I’ll be honest: implementing SMART goals isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is not the most fun way to develop your goals.

It is a scientifically proven method that will drastically increase your chances of success.

I use the SMART framework all the time. It helps me write smart goals that I can achieve.

Don’t you want the same? Then, give it a try.

H2: Exploring HARD Goals: The Challenger Framework

I have just recently learned about the HARD framework. While the SMART framework, to me, has become the natural way to set goals. The HARD framework takes us outside of our comfort zone and promotes a new revolutionary way of thinking about goals.

So, what does HARD stand for?

H – Heartfelt: Your goal should resonate deeply with your personal values and aspirations. It’s not just about what you think you should do, but what truly matters to you on an emotional level. For example, instead of just aiming to “get a promotion,” your goal might be to “lead a team that makes a significant impact on our company’s sustainability efforts.”

A – Animated: You should be able to vividly picture your goal as if it’s already achieved. This visualization creates a powerful mental image that motivates you and helps you stay focused. Imagine yourself not just “running a marathon,” but crossing the finish line with your arms raised, surrounded by cheering friends and family.

R – Required: Your goal should feel necessary and compelling, not just a nice-to-have. It should be something you feel driven to accomplish, almost as if you have no choice but to pursue it to get your desired outcome.

D – Difficult: A HARD goal pushes you out of your comfort zone and challenges you to grow. It should be something that stretches your abilities and requires you to level up. A good measure is that it requires you to at least improve your current standard by 20%. For example, increase sales by 25% in the next quarter.

HARD goals are designed to push you beyond what you think is possible. They tap into your passion, leverage vivid imagination, feel critically important, and require significant effort and growth to achieve. While they may seem daunting at first, HARD goals can unlock extraordinary levels of motivation and achievement.

To me the advantage of setting goals the HARD way is that you tap more into emotions. The vivid imagination of goal that you need the fulfill and that means a lot to you can create stong emotions and a drive that gives you all the motivation needed to push through the difficult challenges.

HARD goals require you to really think about what you want. Your goals can’t just be something you vaguely desire. It has to meet all the criteria. When I set a HARD goal, I get more clarity on what is important to me.

One of the coolest things about HARD goals is how they encourage you to think outside the box. When you’re aiming for something truly challenging, you can’t rely on the same old strategies. You gotta get creative!

Remember, the goal-setting process is personal. What works for me might not work for you. But I can tell you this – since embracing HARD goals, I’ve felt like I am on a new level of goal achievement.

H2: Key Differences Between SMART and HARD Goals

I have been setting goals for a long time and both the SMART and HARD frameworks are some of the most useful and impactful that I have learned and used over the years.

Whichever you choose, you will be much better off than just scribbling your New Year wishes on a little paper and throwing it into the fire, hoping it will turn into reality.

First off, let’s talk about the emotional factor. This is where HARD goals really shine. I always try to formulate my goals so that they evoke as many emotions as I can. The emotional attachment is what really starts to matter when the way to your starts to goal gets hard.

While HARD goals clearly go emotionally deeper, SMART goals have heart, too. It requires you to set relevant goals, which, by definition, also evoke emotions.

The key difference I see here is that while HARD doesn’t just evoke emotions, by animating them, we actively try to make them more intense.

Where HARD goals shine with emotions, SMART goals excel in clarity and structure. This framework promotes a way of thinking that allows you to construct a robust roadmap for achievement.

You will always know where you are on your way to achieve a goal. This enables you to readjust all the time if you realize that you are, of course. If you stay flexible in your approach, then you should consistently find a way to achieve your goals by the set deadline.

For example, if you use the SMART framework to “write a 50,000-word novel in 3 months,” You would know weekly word count targets and a clear endpoint. That’s great for measuring your progress. If you do not hit your target in one week, you know that you have to write more on the next one.

HARD goals, however, are more about the big picture. They’re less concerned with the details and more focused on the overall impact. A HARD goal would be more like”write a novel that changes how people think about climate change” and wouldn’t come with a built-in word count or deadline. Instead, it would keep the focus on the broader vision and impact.

In the end, both SMART and HARD goals have their place in your goal-setting toolkit. SMART goals are fantastic for clear, structured objectives where you need to see steady progress. HARD goals are your go-to when you want to tap into your passion, push your limits, and achieve something truly extraordinary.

When to Use SMART Goals

Both frameworks have advantages and disadvantages, which make either one more suited for specific types of goals. Let’s explore some scenarios where it does make more sense to use SMART goals.

Goals with a deadline

SMART goals are like that reliable friend who always shows up on time. They shine brightest when dealing with projects with clear endpoints and outcomes.

Whenever you have a deadline, you are probably better off with SMART goals, as the framework ensures you get it all done in time.

For example, if you want to be jacked for summer and you only have 4 months left, using the SMART framework is probably the better choice.

Goals that require team collaboration

SMART goals provide a shared language and a clear destination for everyone to work towards. This is crucial when you are working in a team and it is important that you all work together.

A clear, measurable goal with a clearly defined outcome allows the team to create a common strategy where everyone knows what to do. Additionally, it makes team meetings much simpler and more productive.

The beauty of SMART goals in team settings is that they leave little room for misinterpretation. Everyone knows what success looks like and can align their efforts accordingly. As each member knows his role, tasks, and deadline.

Academic achievements

When it comes to academic achievement, SMART goals can be a real game-changer.

In school setting clear, measurable objectives just makes sense. Instead of a vague “I want to do better in school,” a SMART goal might look like this: “Improve my overall GPA from 3.2 to 3.5 this semester by attending all classes, completing all assignments on time, and studying for at least 2 hours each day.”

This approach gives students a concrete target and a roadmap to follow. It breaks down the daunting task of “doing better” into specific, actionable steps. Plus, the measurable aspect allows students to track progress and adjust their strategies if needed.

Financial planning

The nature of finance makes it perfectly suited for the SMART framework. Finance is always very specific, measurable, achievable, and relevant.

The problem most have is that they do not set any deadline for their financial dreams. However, if you do then you already have a SMART goal which makes a lot of sense.

Imagine if you say that in the next 20 years, you want to accumulate 2 million dollars of savings. Then, you can calculate exactly how much you have to set aside and invest every month and how much risk you have to be taking to achieve that dream.

In finance, emotions only are not enough. You need a plan with a deadline, or you will never be financially free.

Potential limitations of SMART goals

Now, I wouldn’t be giving you the full picture if I didn’t mention some of the potential pitfalls of SMART goals. They’re great, but they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution.

One limitation I’ve encountered is that SMART goals can sometimes lead to tunnel vision. When you’re so focused on hitting specific metrics, you might miss out on unexpected opportunities or creative solutions that fall outside your defined goal.

I’ve also seen SMART goals struggle in rapidly changing environments. If your industry is prone to sudden shifts, you might find yourself constantly revising your SMART goals, which can be frustrating and time-consuming.

Another potential downside is that SMART goals don’t always capture the qualitative aspects of success. They’re great for numbers and deadlines, but you might just miss the emotional reward you were after because you were too focused on numbers.

Despite these limitations, SMART goals remain an incredibly powerful tool in many situations. The key is to use them wisely, in conjunction with other goal-setting and strategic planning methods.

The best goal-setting framework is the one that works for you and your team. So don’t be afraid to experiment, mix and match, and find the approach that helps you achieve your best performance.

When HARD Goals Shine

Ok, now let’s discuss specific cases where it makes more sense to use the HARD framework.

Obviously, we use it when our goals require passion and emotional investment.

HARD goals are that friend who always pushes you to chase your dreams. They shine brightest when dealing with objectives that require deep personal commitment and emotional investment.

For example, if you want to make a significant career change or start a business that aligns with your values, the HARD framework might be the better choice.

Goals that inspire creativity and innovation

HARD goals provide a vision that can inspire creative thinking and innovative solutions. This is crucial when working on projects requiring thinking outside the box or disrupting the status quo.

A bold, emotionally charged goal allows individuals or teams to dream big and explore unconventional approaches. Additionally, it can spark passion and enthusiasm that drive people to go above and beyond.

The beauty of HARD goals in creative settings is that they encourage risk-taking and novel thinking. Everyone is inspired to contribute imaginative ideas to achieve something truly remarkable.

Personal growth and transformation

When it comes to personal development and transformation, HARD goals can be incredibly powerful.

In areas of life where you’re seeking significant change, a HARD goal pushes us to go big.

This approach gives individuals a compelling vision to work towards. It taps into their deepest motivations and encourages them to stretch beyond their current capabilities. The animated aspect of HARD goals tells individuals to vividly imagine their success, which leads to even more motivation.

Entrepreneurship and startups

The nature of early entrepreneurship makes it well-suited for the HARD framework. Starting and growing a business often requires a blend of passion, vision, necessity, and willingness to tackle difficult challenges.

Imagine if you set a HARD goal to “revolutionize the education industry by creating a platform that makes high-quality learning accessible to everyone, everywhere.” This goal sets the foundation for an outstanding business.

In entrepreneurship, emotion, and vision are often as important as concrete metrics.

For my business, I do not yet have clear goals and metrics that I want to reach. What I have is a compelling vision that gets me out of bed and on my computer to work for hours every single day.

Potential limitations of HARD goals

While HARD goals can be incredibly motivating, they’re not without their challenges. It’s important to be aware of their potential limitations.

One challenge with HARD goals is that they can sometimes feel overwhelming. When you’re aiming for something so big and audacious, it can be difficult to know where to start or how to measure progress.

Another potential downside is that HARD goals might not always align well with short-term, practical needs. While you’re chasing your big vision, it’s important not to neglect the day-to-day tasks that keep things running.

Lastly, sometimes, when you are looking for a very specific outcome, you might not want to go with a HARD goal. You might move in the right direction but just miss your target by some inches because you are only looking at the big picture.

Despite these limitations, HARD goals remain an incredibly powerful tool for driving significant change and achievement. The key is to use them wisely, often in combination with more concrete planning methods.

Combining SMART and HARD Goals for Maximum Impact

We have seen that both frameworks can be extremely powerful and effective methods of setting goals. Both frameworks have advantages and disadvantages, and as we have seen, sometimes one makes more sense than the other.

However, there are also cases where it makes a lot of sense to use them both in combination to get a difficult, successful outcome by a deadline and be powered by strong emotions.

Strategies for integrating both frameworks

The key to integrating SMART and HARD goals is to use each framework’s strengths to complement the other’s weaknesses. Here’s how this can work.

Start with the HARD goal: Begin by setting a big, motivating HARD goal that really gets you going.

Break it down SMART-style: Take that HARD goal and break it into smaller, SMART objectives. These become your stepping stones. It could very well be the case that you need more than one SMART goal for one HARD vision.

Use HARD for motivation, SMART for execution: Let your HARD goal inspire you, while your SMART goals guide your daily actions.

Regular check-ins: Periodically revisit your HARD goal to reignite your passion, then adjust your SMART goals as needed.

This is what I do for all my goals. I have a big picture in mind. A vision of what I am going to achieve and who I am going to become in this area. I make it big and challenging.

Then, I break the vision down into into smaller goals according to the smart acronym. Like this I create actionable steps that will get me to my goals.

Balancing structure and emotional connection in goals

Finding the right balance between structure and emotion is crucial. Too much structure can kill motivation, while too much emotion can lead to a lack of direction. Here are some tips to achieve a good balance:

Use emotive language in your SMART goals. Instead of “Increase sales by 20%,” try “Delight 20% more customers with our amazing product.”

Add measurable elements to your HARD goals. If your HARD goal is to “become a world-class guitarist,” define what “world-class” means to you in measurable terms.

Create a visual representation of your SMART goals that connects to your HARD goal. This could be a vision board or a progress tracker that ties your daily actions to your big vision.

Celebrate SMART milestones in ways that reinforce your HARD goal. When you hit a SMART target, take a moment to visualize how it’s moving you closer to your big HARD goal.

Examples of successful SMART-HARD goal combinations

Here are a few examples of how those frameworks can work together in harmony.

H2: Implementing Your Chosen Goal-Setting Framework

Alright, goal-setters, you’ve picked your framework – now it’s time to put it into action! Whether you’re team SMART, team HARD, or a mix of both, let’s dive into how to make these goals work for you in the real world.

Steps to get started with SMART or HARD goals

Choose your goal(s): A common framework I used a lot is to divide my goals in four categories: Things I wanted to achieve, things I wanted to experience, things I wanted to own, and lastly relationships goals. Come up with some ideas for each category and then choose the most important ones.

Write it down: There’s power in putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Make your goal concrete by writing it out in detail.

Break it down: Identify the key steps or milestones you’ll need to hit along the way. For SMART goals, these might be specific targets. For HARD goals, think about the major phases of your journey.

Create an action plan: Develop a detailed plan of what you need to do daily, weekly, or monthly to progress toward your goal.

Schedule it: What you schedule becomes real. Trust me, that’s what has held me back for many years. Take your calendar out and block out time dedicated to one goal.

Set up a tracking system: Decide how you’ll measure your progress. This is crucial for SMART goals but can be helpful for HARD goals too. Check-in on a regular basis and assess your progress.

Share your goal: Tell someone about your goal. This creates accountability and can provide support when you need it. Additionally, the more you talk about your goal, the more you will think about it subconsciously.

Overcoming common obstacles in goal achievement

Let’s face it, the road to achieving your goals isn’t always smooth. Over the years, I made many mistakes. Here are some common slipups and how you don’t have to make the same ones.

Overwhelm: Sometimes, you set a goal that seems too big to achieve. But if you break it down enough, you can achieve any goal. Chunk your goal down into smaller, manageable tasks. Focus on one step at a time.

Setbacks: Remember, progress isn’t always linear. Shit is going to go wrong; I can assure you that. Expect that; plan for that. It is key to stay flexible in your approach and never let your head down.

Lack of time: We all have 24 hours a day. Go through your goals and ask yourself which ones are the most important ones and how much time you need to invest. Then, set time aside for the main ones. Yes, this probably means you have to cut back somewhere. Sacrifice is needed.

Self-doubt: It is normal to sometimes stop believing in yourself. The key here is surrounding yourself with supportive people. Consider finding a mentor or coach who believes in your potential.

Losing focus: When you first set a goal you are motivated and inspired, it is easy. But what happens six months later? Are you still doing the work? Regular check-ins can help you remain focused. Maybe put a date into your calendar when you will revisit all your goals.

Conclusion:

And there you have it! The ultimate showdown between SMART and HARD goals.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to achieving your dreams. Whether you’re team SMART, team HARD, or you prefer the hybrid approach, the key is to choose a framework that resonates with you and pushes you to be your best self.

I really encourage you to try out different ways to do it. After all, goal setting is a fun process. The hard work comes after

Don’t be afraid of readjusting your goals a week later. I have done more goal setting processes than I can count and every time I got more clarity about my future. It is never a wasted process.

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you all the best for your future and I hope that you may achieve as many of your goals as you can. Just don’t forget to smile along the way. Embrace the challenges they make reaching your goal so much more rewarding.

Close your eyes for a moment and picture yourself five years from now.

What do you see? If you’re drawing a blank, you’re not alone! Many have problems visualizing their future.

But here’s the point—future self-visualization is actually a simple but incredibly important skill that you can master in a very short time and create huge effects.

At least it has for me. I am an ambitious person and have many big goals. Over the last few years, I continuously tried to improve and work towards my goals. Sadly, I could never really adjust to this lifestyle; it did not feel right.

That was until I started to visualize who I really wanted to be. Moving toward this future me, gave me the emotional juice and motivation to change my entire life.

Let’s get started and see how you can also activate this superpower.

What is Future Self Visualization?

So, what exactly is future self-visualization? It’s basically like creating a mental picture of your ideal future self. You close your eyes and imagine yourself achieving your goals, living the life you want, and being the person you aspire to be. It’s not just daydreaming, though. It’s a mental exercise; by creating and revisiting this vision, you start telling your mind to make this into reality.

I remember when I first heard about this concept. I tried it, but not with my whole heart. It did not have a big effect, so I stopped doing it after a few times. How could just thinking about my future make any real difference?

But then I heard about it again from Tony Robbins, and the way they explained it made much more sense to me. So I started to use it again.

Later, I found out that there is actually some science behind this.

Top athletes like alpine skiers use practice visualization to achieve their best performance. We can use the same techniques in our personal and professional life.

When we vividly imagine something, our neural pathways activate in almost the same way as if we were actually experiencing it. It’s like a mental rehearsal that primes our brain for success. Pretty cool, right?

Now, you might be thinking, “Isn’t this just glorified goal-setting?”. It is pretty similar, however there are key differences.

With traditional goal-setting, you’re focusing on what you want to achieve. With future self-visualization, you’re focusing on who you want to become. It’s not just about the end result; it’s about the journey and the person you’ll be when you get there.

Even though it seems like a small difference, this is a completely different way of thinking and looking at life.

Success comes and goes, but who you become will always stay with you. That’s why this creates a much deeper emotional drive.

When I started using future self-visualization tasks, what earlier seemed like a lot of work, became easy because I was able to link the progress to my future version.

Now, I’m not saying future self-visualization is some magic bullet that’ll solve all your problems. It’s not. You still gotta put in the work. It is still going to be hard sometimes and you will need to push yourself.

However, I’ve found this visualization exercise to be an incredibly powerful tool for staying motivated and focused on my long-term goals.

The Benefits of Visualizing Your Future Self

The way our brain creates the emotions of motivation and drive is that whenever you make progress towards a goal or something you desire it releases the neurochemical dopamine. Dopamine then creates a positive feeling of progress.

We then associate this nice feeling with the activity we just did, and the result is that we want to do it again.

Actually a quite simple process.

And the absolute key component of this cycle is that you have clearly defined goals. If you only have a vague imagination on what you want, then your brain is not quite sure if you are making the progress you desire and thus you might not feel the reward for work you put in.

This is where future self-visualization kicks in:

By creating a vision for ourselves and continuously revisiting it, making it stronger and clearer every day, we create this clear association for our minds. Then, our mind automatically realizes when we are moving towards this vision and rewards us every single time with a hit of dopamine.

Now obviously you can do this to with “normal goals” which is a good thing as well. I just have found that for me my future self creates stronger emotions that lead to a bigger drive.

It’s funny how this mental exercise can then start to impact your decision-making. When you’ve got a clear picture of your future self in your mind’s eye, it’s like you’ve got this internal compass guiding you. I found myself naturally having it easier to make choices that aligned with my future visions, even in small, everyday situations.

Another benefit of future self visualization is that visualizing my future self forced me to really reflect on what I wanted out of life. It helped me identify some blind spots I had about my deepest desires and personal goals.

I had to ask myself: “Who do I really want to be?”

Thats a powerful question many never truly ask themselves. Since we were young, we are taught to focus on what we wanna do, study, or work. You are so much more than just what you do, so your vision should reflect that.

Some also say that it helped them with anxiety. There’s something comforting about having a vision of your best possible self to focus on. It doesn’t mean everything’s perfect, but it gives you a sense of direction and purpose that can be really grounding.

If you regularly imagine your bright future you will start to believe that you are able to turn this into reality.

There are many other benefits of future self-visualization. Here is a quick overview of what other positive effects you might expect when you adopt this practice

It can supercharge your motivation to chase after your goals

It can boost your self-awareness

You build up your mental toughness for life’s challenges

It changes your focus on what truly matters to you

You can improve your ability for long-term planning

It enhances your overall sense of purpose and direction

It increases your confidence in your ability to change and grow

It promotes a more positive outlook on life and your potential

So, if you’re feeling stuck or unsure about your path, give future self-visualization a try. Spend some time each day imagining your best possible self. It might make a big difference, and it only takes a few minutes a day.

7 Powerful Future Self Visualization Techniques for 2024

Before we start I want to say that there is no right or wrong technique here. Theses are all ideas which are meant to give you some inspiration on how to start visualizing your future self.

Try different methods and combine them. I, for example, have a vision board, use the success scenario method, and sometimes envision my future self in front of a mirror. I am still evolving my practice.

It is meant to be fun!

Try to enjoy the process and play around.

The Success Scenario Technique

Success scenarios are like creating a mental movie of your future achievements and playing that movie over and over again until it becomes reality.

I do this with every goal I have. I envision how it would be, and I really feel how it would feel to already have this as part of my life.

In this technique; we are focusing more on who we want to be. Of course, this is closely linked to our achievements. Same stuff, but a different focus.

Here’s how you can make this technique work for you:

Pick a specific goal. Don’t just visualize “success” in general. Get precise. Maybe it’s landing your dream job, buying your first home, or mastering a new skill. Ask yourself how you would have to change to achieve this goal.

Now, close your eyes and imagine you’ve achieved that goal and become the person who made it happen. Really put yourself in that moment. What do you see? Hear? Smell? Feel? The more senses you involve, the more real it becomes.

First, just visualize the experience. Then, step into the experience and feel it as if you were there. Feel and intensify the emotions you feel right then.

Don’t just think about what you want. Also visualize the challenges that you have overcome. How you have grown as a person working towards this goal.

A great tip that I follow is that I create sections of my life. Like my friendships, my body, my work, my business, and then I create at least one success scenario per category which I visit every week at least once.

If you like, you can even take some time at the end and write it all down. That makes it easier to revisit the same scenario.

This exercise can really help you to make your dreams come true. Because if you do it over and over again your brain will search and find ways to turn this into reality.

Virtual Reality Immersion

Okay, let’s talk about taking future self visualization to a whole new level – literally! Virtual Reality (VR) is changing the game when it comes to imagining our future selves. It’s like stepping into a 3D version of your dreams.

Well, instead of just picturing your future in your mind’s eye, VR technology allows you to create and interact with a virtual version of your future self.

The technology is advancing rapidly. There are countless captured and created realities you can enter. If you have a VR-headset at home try this out. Search or create environment that inspire you, go there and envison yourself there.

I did not have the chance to try this yet, but I would love to.

The cool thing about VR is that it engages all your senses. You’re not just seeing your future self; you’re hearing, moving, and interacting with them. This deep level of immersion can really cement that future vision in your mind and make it feel more achievable.

We are still in the early days of VR. The options right now are limited, but new stuff is released all the time. I can imagine crazy AI-VR coming soon.

The Letter from Your Future Self

This exercise is like a time capsule in reverse, and it’s a powerful way to connect with your ideal future.

You sit down and write a detailed letter to your present self, but you’re writing it as if you’re your future ideal self. It’s like giving yourself a pep talk from the future. I know it might sound silly, but I bet you can come up with some amazing ideas and advice from your future self.

The key is to first get really associated with your future self. Go through different areas of life like professional, your relationship, or your body. Imagine how you want to be in those areas, feel it like you would be living this right now. Then sit down and write the letter to yourself.

Tell what has to be done, what was hard, what was easier, and what some amazing results were. Get creative. The key is to adopt a different point of view and activate strong emotions.

Now, to make this letter really impactful, there are a few key elements you’ll want to include:

Achievements: Have your future self describe the goals you’ve accomplished. Be specific!

Daily life: Paint a picture of what an average day looks like for your future self. What time do you wake up? What kind of work are you doing?

Feelings: Describe how you fell in this future state. Are you confident? Content? Excited?

Challenges overcome: Mention obstacles you’ve faced and how you conquered them.

Relationships: Talk about your personal and professional relationships. How have they evolved?

Wisdom: Share advice or insights you’ve gained over the years.

Gratitude: Express appreciation for the steps your present self is taking towards this future.

Physical health: Describe your health and any positive habits you’ve developed.

Personal growth: Highlight how you’ve grown as a person.

Next steps: Offer guidance on what your present self should focus on next.

I had actually not heard of this technique before writing this article, but I am going to try it right away.

This exercise is probably not something you are going to do every day. Once a week or even a month is great. You will even get much value out of it if you only do it once.

The Mirror Method

Closely related to the letter exercise is the Mirror Method: It’s a simple yet powerful technique that can really bring your future vision to life.

Here’s how it works: Find a full-length mirror and stand in front of it. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself. Now, start to imagine your future self staring back at you. This isn’t just about seeing an older version of yourself – it’s about envisioning the person you aspire to become.

Get emotional. Envision how you would feel if you achieved your goals. How would you stand? How would you smile? What would your eyes tell you?

To make this experience more vivid, try engaging all your senses. How does your future self speak? What’s their tone of voice? How do they carry themselves? You might even imagine the clothes they’re wearing.

Here are some tips to make your mirror sessions more impactful:

Act it out: Talk to yourself, shout, move, laugh. The more you act, the more real it will feel.

Practice expressions: Work on the facial expressions and body language of your confident future self.

Use different times: Try morning sessions to set a positive tone for the day, and evening sessions to reflect on progress.

Be patient: It might feel awkward at first, but the more you practice, the more natural and powerful it becomes.

Remember, the Mirror Method isn’t just about seeing your future self – it’s about embodying that person in the present moment. It’s a fantastic way to bridge the gap between who you are now and who you want to become.

Your brain will not know the difference between your imagination and you standing there. It will start to feel like this is you and thus making it so much easier to become what you see.

So give it a shot!

Vision Board 2.0:

Some long time ago creating a vision board was a long process where you had to search for pictures in magazines then glue them to a paper and so on.

Today you can create your vision board in a matter so minutes. There are millions of pictures on Google and which you can import into a document or use a free collage tool.

If you are serious about it you obviously should take some more time.

Your imagination is an incredibly powerful tool and if you combine visualization exercises with real images you can elevate the potential even more. An image can evoke strong emotions and drive within a heartbeat.

That’s why I highly suggest that you craft yourself a vision board.

Here’s how you can create your own digital vision board:

Choose your platform: There are tons of options out there. You can use graphic design tools like Canva or Adobe Spark, or you can simply use Google Docs.

Gather your media: This is where it gets fun. Collect images that represent your goals, find people that represent who you wanna be.

Organize your board: Arrange your elements in a way that feels right to you. Maybe you want to group things by life areas (career, relationships, health) or create a timeline of your future.

Make it accessible: Save your board somewhere you can easily access it – on your phone, as your computer wallpaper, or even as a screensaver.

To make your digital vision board truly engaging:

Use high-quality, vibrant images that really speak to you

Include personal photos to make it more meaningful

Add quotes or mantras that inspire you

Create a visual story or journey across your board

Update it regularly as your goals evolve

The beauty of a digital vision board is its flexibility. You can tweak and update it as your dreams grow and change. Plus, having it on your devices means you can tap into that motivational energy anytime, anywhere.

Anytime I start my laptop I see a bunch of pictures that motivate and inspire me even more. All it took was one hour to set it up.

So, fire up your favorite digital tool and start creating.

This is my personal vision board.

Guided Future Self-Meditation

Okay, let’s talk about guided future self-meditation. Personally, I prefer to do my own process, but for others, it might be the complete opposite. Go with what is best for you!

Guided self-meditation is a mental journey in which you visualize yourself in the future, guided by a soothing voice telling you what to imagine. You can just relax and fully focus on creating a vivid imagination, and the voice guides you through the whole process.

Here’s my step-by-step guide to nailing this technique:

Find a quiet spot: This is crucial; you need to be able to focus fully and eliminate distractions.

Get comfy: Sit or lie down, or choose a sitting meditation pose like cross-legged or lotus pose.

Choose your guide: Pick a guided meditation app or video.

Put on some headphones: This is optional, but it lets you immerse yourself fully.

Follow the guide’s instructions: He will surely lead you through an awesome journey.

Now, let’s talk about apps and resources. There’s a ton out there, but here are my top picks:

Insight Timer: This app is a goldmine for guided meditations, including several great future self-visualizations.

Headspace: While it’s more known for mindfulness, Headspace has some solid visualization exercises too.

YouTube: If you do not want to pay any money, there are many good guided future self-meditations on YouTube.

Spotify: Yep,Spotify has guided meditations too. Search for “future self visualization/meditation” and you’ll find a bunch of options.

The Time Machine Journaling Exercise

When we write, we engage many parts of our brains. That’s why we learn much better if we write things down. The same principle applies to future visualization. With a journal, you take this to another level and make it stick much more.

So, picture this: you’ve got a time machine (I know, I know, stay with me here). You step in, set the dial to five years from now, and whoosh! You’re chatting with your future self. Cool, right? That’s essentially what we’re doing with this journaling exercise, minus the fancy gadgets.

Here’s how you can get started:

Grab a notebook or fire up your laptop. I highly suggest a notebook, because when we write with a pen, our brain is much more active than when we type on a keyboard. Nevertheless, a Laptop works fine too. Now, start writing as if you’re having a conversation with your future self. Ask questions, and let your imagination run wild with the answers.

Some Ideas that you might ask your future self.

“Hey future me, what’s your typical day like?”

“What major goals have you accomplished in the past five years?”

“What new skills have you picked up?”

“How has your perspective on life changed?”

Now, here’s where it gets really interesting. As you’re writing, pay attention to how you feel. Are you excited? Nervous? Skeptical? These emotions can give you valuable insights. It is the emotions we are looking for because they will give us the drive.

Maybe even write them down.

Pro tip: Don’t just focus on the big stuff like career and relationships. Get into the details of daily life too. What does future you eat for breakfast? What’s your morning routine like? How do you unwind after a long day? These details can help make your vision feel more real and achievable.

Try to do this exercise on a regular basis, maybe once a month. Whatever fits your schedule.

Remember, the goal here isn’t to predict the future perfectly. It’s about gaining clarity on what you want and creating a roadmap to get there.

Common Obstacles in Future Self-Visualization (and How to Overcome Them)

Even though the exercises are all quite simple, we still want to avoid some common pitfalls, so let’s take a quick look at them.

The Wandering Mind

This happens to everybody. You’re trying to visualize your future self, and suddenly, you’re thinking about what to have for dinner. Been there, done that.

If that happens, don’t worry and just get right back to where you left off. The more you do it the better you get at it. If you have trouble then just start with short sessions and build your way up.

Also, the more vivid you make your visualization, the easier it is to stay engaged.

The overly sceptic

You might be thinking, “How’s daydreaming gonna help me achieve my goals?” I was skeptical too. But here’s the thing – visualization isn’t magic. It’s a tool that primes your brain to recognize opportunities and stay motivated.

Try this: start with a small, short-term goal. Maybe visualize acing a presentation next week. Then, pay attention to how this visualization affects your preparation and performance. Seeing real results, even small ones, can help quiet that inner skeptic.

The Consistency Problem

Ah, consistency. The holy grail of any practice. If you want this to work, then you have to do it on a regular basis. There is no way around this.

I do mine at least once a week, some folks even once a day.

Schedule it to make it real. It is like 10 minutes of practice. Just take your calendar, think about when you regularly have some time, and put it in. Then, follow your schedule.

I know everyone is buisy and has a lot of stuff to do. However, I am sure everyone has 10 minutes per week to envision their future. Give yourself that gift, it is actually a lot of fun.

Conclusion:

Congratulations! You’ve just unlocked the treasure trove of future self-visualization techniques.

By consistently applying these powerful methods, you’re not just dreaming about your ideal future – you’re actively shaping it. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, or in this case, a single visualization.

So why wait? Start your transformation today, and watch as your visualized future self becomes your lived reality. The only question left is: what amazing version of yourself will you create?

I know many people have really hard jobs, and in the evening after work, there is often not much energy left, and all you want to do is relax. So, going home, eating, and chilling in front of the TV seems to be the right thing to do. But ask yourself:

Is that really how you want to live your life?

Do you think once you’re 80 years old and look back at your life, you will say, “I wish I spent more time in front of my TV!”

I think not. This means when you are tired every day after work, then something needs to change. The sooner, the better, so you have energy in the evenings to do all that really matters.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance and separating work from personal life can significantly improve your energy levels. Your personal life impacts your mental well-being, and managing it well can help reduce stress and burnout.

Change always starts with understanding the problem, and that’s what we are going to do right now. Let me help you to understand how to have more energy after work.

Here are some of my favorite ways to increase your energy after work:

Identify Fatigue Causes: Understand different types of fatigue (mental, physical, chronic) to address them effectively.

Prioritize Sleep: Ensure 7-9 hours of quality sleep in regular cycles to maintain energy.

Manage Workplace Stress: To reduce stress, take regular breaks, exercise, stay organized, and avoid using your phone during breaks.

Balance Physical Labor: If your job is physically demanding, focus on rest, nutrition, and targeted exercises.

Reduce Caffeine and Sugar: Limit intake to prevent energy crashes; opt for complex carbs instead.

Boost Daily Energy: Get morning sunlight, train focus, plan enjoyable activities, stay hydrated, and engage in regular cardio.

Why am I tired after work?

It is important to understand that fatigue can have many reasons and that there are different types of fatigue. For example, there is a clear difference between mental and physical fatigue.

Additionally, if you feel tired after work, it could just be a short energy low, or it could be a rather long-term state like chronic fatigue syndrome, which lasts at least six months.

A poor work-life balance can contribute to feeling tired after work. Spending personal time thinking about work and bringing work projects home can lead to negative effects like sleep deprivation and poor mood.

Scientists are still unsure why people feel so tired after mentally demanding work. There has been much discussion about it, so if you are wondering why you are often so tired, you are not the only one.

It is still a hardly understood area.

Still, there have been breakthroughs, such as a recent study. Scientists were able to link fatigue to the accumulation of the neurotransmitter glutamate. This study may be one of the first steps to gaining an even deeper understanding of fatigue and finding new solutions.

However, many key elements that can lead to loss of energy have already been found, and protocols on what you can do to prevent this have been developed.

Let’s start with reasons why your energy levels are often low and drained in the evenings.

1. You do not get enough sleep

This is a no-brainer. Obviously, you will feel tired when you do not sleep enough. As basic as it sounds, many people do not get sufficient restful sleep at night.

About one-third of adults sleep less than 7 hours per night. How much sleep one needs at night depends on the person, but it’s clear that sleep deprivation has many negative effects. One of them is a lack of energy, especially after a long day of work.

If you regularly miss essential sleep time, the other tips in this article won’t help you. Sadly, we can not change the fact that we are animals and that we need to sleep seven to nine hours to stay healthy and energized.

The first thing you should find out is how much sleep you actually need.

Here are some guidelines provided by the Sleep Foundation.

I think most of you know how much sleep is enough sleep for you.

It is important to know that humans sleep in cycles. Each cycle takes about one and a half hours to complete. Ideally, you wake up at the end of a cycle because the last two phases of sleep are the ones when you get the most recovery.

But, when talking about sleep, it’s not all about quantity. You also need good quality sleep. When talking about quality, routine is the most essential factor. Getting a regular sleep schedule will help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep during the night, and improve regeneration during sleep.

Having a steady sleep-wake cycle could be the game changer for most of you out there.

2. Your Job is Stressful

If you are experiencing constant workplace stress, you will feel drained in the evening; there is no way around it.

When you are stressed, your body releases the hormone cortisol. In the short term, cortisol activates a fight or flight response, which activates the body and mind. However, if the levels stay too high for too long, you will experience many negative effects.

This includes a loss of energy because your body is actually ready to fight for an extended period of time.

Chronic stress even proves to be toxic for the brain.

Luckily, there are many ways to reduce stress at work and overall

Take short, regular breaks at work. Ideally, get some fresh air and sunlight and take some deep breaths, focusing on elongating your exhales.

Regular exercise and ice baths can help you train to keep control while willingly inducing stress.

A 15 to 25-minute power nap can work wonders, but it is not for everyone.

Plan, schedule, and stay organized. Through this, you can stay more focused and less overwhelmed.

Don’t use your phone during your breaks; it only makes it worse.

3. You are sitting all day at work

Nowadays, most work involves sitting in front of a computer screen. If you sit all day and do not move much, your body gets tight, and your energy levels sink.

If you do not counteract this, it will get worse every day. Incorporating a morning workout into your daily routine can kickstart your day and promote physical activity throughout the day.

Still, the easiest way to activate your body and get energized is to move it.

Take some time during the day to move, stretch, and get your heart rate up. Ideally, you activate your body multiple times a day.

Have you ever thought of using a stand-up desk? I know it sucks at first, but be sure you will feel better during and after the day. I am standing while I am writing this article, and it helps a lot.

I know stand-up desks are expensive, but there are also relatively cheap stand-up desks converted like the one I use.

I’d say you have no excuse why you should stay all day in your uncomfortable chair.

4. You are doing too much physical labor

If you work in construction or any other physically taxing job, you are going to be pretty dead after a long day of work.

You use a lot of energy, and you do not get sufficient rest. That’s why you should focus on physical regeneration.

Do strengthening and stretching exercises specifically for your type of work. Train the muscles that you use a lot so they do not fatigue that quickly, and you keep your body safe from injury. Also, stretch so you can move freely because muscle tension can actually make work even harder.

Get enough sleep. Sleep is still the most regenerative state for your body. The better your sleep quality, the higher your energy levels after work.

Focus on your nutrition and stay hydrated during the day.

5. You’re consuming too much Caffeine or Sugar

A lot of people consume sugar and caffeine products to have more energy, but I can actually have the opposite effect.

Caffeine, on the one hand, makes you more awake because it blocks the neurochemical adenosine, which would actually make you tired. However, once this effect wears off (often in the evening), all the built-adenosine kicks hard, and you will get an after-caffeine low.

Additionally, caffeine takes eight to ten hours to wear off fully; if you go to sleep during this time, your sleep quality decreases, and you will feel drained the next day. Then, you need even more caffeine, and you enter a vicious cycle.

Sugar has a similar effect; when you consume it, your blood sugar spikes, leading to a quick rise in your energy levels, which is followed by a low.

That’s why I suggest no caffeine after two and focus on eating more complex carbohydrates, meaning whole grains and veggies, instead of a poor diet with high sugar content.

6. You are overworking

Your body only produces that much energy every day. If you are overworking, you use more energy than your body can produce.

This applies to physical and mental health. Thinking, reasoning, and talking use way more energy than you think.

I know many have demanding but important work to do, but you are helping no one if you are working towards burnout.

You need to have a healthy work-life balance. This means that you need to be intelligent in using your time and energy. There needs to be a place for your work, personal goals, and health.

7. Depression and Anxiety

Do you feel down or sad most of the time, or have you lost interest in most of the activities you like?

In the past months, were you constantly afraid of a specific situation, or did thoughts of a past event haunt you during your days?

If you could answer one of those questions with a yes, chances are that you tend towards depression or a form of anxiety or maybe even PTSD.

Those disorders are nothing to be ashamed of, but they will drain your energy, and no matter what, if you lack mental well-being, then you lack energy or motivation.

It is very important to note that those two questions are by far not enough evidence to make a diagnosis, but maybe you should consider talking to a specialist.

Get professional help.

Therapy or coaching can work wonders, and your energy levels will rise once you start battling your disorder.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="538" src="https://eliasbehrens.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Anxiety-and-Depression-1024x538.jpg" alt="A person in distress sits with a therapist who offers support, and another person stands alone, appearing contemplative.
What are some simple practices anyone can do to have more energy after work?

Now, we have examined many reasons why your energy levels could be depleted in the evening, and I have given you at least one answer to every problem.

A few other tips to improve your energy levels include setting a comfortable temperature in your workspace, using noise-canceling headphones to minimize distractions, and occasionally changing your place of work to keep your environment stimulating.

In the next section, we discuss other tools for increasing energy and combating post-work fatigue in general.

1. View sunlight in the morning

Yeah, I know it sounds odd at first, but viewing bright sunlight in the morning can actually increase your energy throughout the whole day. But how?

Sunlight is the number one factor that regulates our circadian rhythm, meaning our internal clock.

If you make it a habit to get sun exposure daily for at least 10 minutes in your first waking hour, then your body naturally releases more hormones that make you awake in the morning. Leading to more energy during the first hours of the day.

Additionally, a more balanced hormone system will help you sleep better and more easily.

2. Train your focus

The ability to concentrate is essential to life, but sadly, we usually never get taught it. Many even have trouble focusing for an extended period of time.

In essence, it is a very simple skill: the ability to keep one’s awareness on one task or object for an extended period of time. However, mastering it is insanely difficult.

Focus helps you preserve your energy because distraction drains it. Every time your attention needs to switch, you lose some energy, causing mental exhaustion.

To train your focus, you can practice mindfulness or meditation.

The easiest way to practice mindfulness is to try doing only one thing at a time and focusing 100% on it. Try to be more in the present moment and train to not get distracted.

Meditation is a practice you can do for 5-30 minutes a day that extensively trains your focus. There are many tutorials online.

Also, try to eliminate distractions in your workspace to improve your focus even more.

3. Plan to spend time on your hobbies

I think everyone knows the feeling when you are at work or in school and you know later that day you are going to do something you love, and you can’t wait to do it.

You want to recreate this feeling of excitement in your everyday life because it activates and motivates you. A big part of having more energy is activating the mind, not just the body.

So, plan ahead. Whatever it is, lock it in your calendar. It could be anything:

Practice sport (ideally with your friends)

Going out and meeting friends or family

Working in your garden

Play with your kids

Whatever you love to do, do it more.

4. Drink plenty

Humans should drink about 2.4 liters or 18 ounces of water every day in the first ten hours of the day. Age, gender, and weight do not play a huge factor. Even mild dehydration can cause mental fatigue, and you may feel tired.

Drinking is an easy thing to do to keep the body nice and healthy.

Please drink a lot of water. A beer, coffee, or soft drink is occasionally okay, but it shouldn’t be your main fluid intake.

5. Cardio work

At least two 30-minute cardio workouts a week can work wonders. They keep your circulatory system healthy, and if your blood flows more freely through the body, your energy levels will rise as well.

Getting your heart rate up a few times a week can make a real difference. You can go running, play soccer, or use the home trainer. Whatever fits your life.

How this guide can help you

I am sure you can change some aspects of your life so that you can enjoy your evenings even more.

If you feel like seeing a physician could help, don’t shy away. Health should always be the first priority. Many physical conditions may also drain your energy; maybe you only need to work on those.

Summary

Getting into personal development means taking a closer look at yourself and finding ways to improve yourself. It’s about becoming the person who can create the life that you desire.

Quite some time ago, I told myself I have one chance, one life, and I’d better make it count. I knew that if I wanted to change my life, I would have to start with myself. I would have to learn new skills, adopt new mindsets, and do new things. That’s how I began my never-ending journey of personal development.

I imagine that you are here because you made a similar decision, and now you want to know how to start and what you can do to take your life to the next level.

This post aims to give you an overview of productive habits you can adopt to grow as a person. Just read and skim through it until you find one or two activities that resonate with you. Then simply try it out.

The most important step is to get started. It does not matter what you do. It matters that you are trying to do the right thing, and if something ain’t right for you, then learn and change it.

Here are some of my favorite ideas that everyone can do:

Set your goals: You need to know where you are aiming at in life.

Start reading and learning every day: There is so much knowledge out there that can help you improve. Do you really want to miss out?

Create a morning routine: Start every day strong, so there are no bad days.

Do a dopamine detox: This often misinterpreted term stands for cutting overly indulging behaviours from your life so it becomes easier to focus on what is important.

Exercise daily: Maintaining a fit mind and body is essential, and you will have significantly more energy as a result.

What are the best personal development activities?

You still need to start small if you want to go to the next level. The most effective way is not to change everything in your life because it is very difficult to sustain such changes. Start improving your life one habit at a time.

In the end, it matters what you do consistently, so better one new habit than five activities you do once in a while.

So, let’s get straight into it with the first personal development activity.

1. Do a goal-setting process

If you have no clear goals, this should be the first thing that you do!!

Several studies show that people who have clearly defined personal goals are much more likely to have success in their lives. This means they are usually able to fulfill many of those goals.

Which, to me, makes absolute sense. If you walk without any clear directions, the possibility that you will end up somewhere nice is rather small. If you, however, know exactly where you want to go, then you will most likely end up there.

So get clear on what you want to have, achieve, and experience in your life!

2. Get a schedule

There are so many things that one can/should/must do. But people usually have bad time management. If you want to accelerate growth, you need to spend your time effectively.

For this, you need a schedule. There are just endless ways to get caught up. Having a plan reduces the chance that you’ll spend two hours scrolling through Instagram for no apparent reason.

Just take some time at the start of your days, weeks and months and decide what has to happen for you to succeeds in what is most important then, block some time for those activities, that’s it.

Interested in going deeper there, then check out Tony Robbins’ RPM Planning Method.

3. Start learning new skills

Everything in the universe either grows or dies, and it is the same for you.

This is the foundation of personal development. I am always learning something new. There are so many things that you can learn, and there are so many ways you can learn them.

Ideally, your skill development is aligned with your goal setting. That means that you are learning the skills you need to have to achieve your goals. But this does not have to be the case. You can be learning anything that interests you.

I strongly believe that continuous learning is one of the key factors in living a fulfilling life. The more you start learning, the more you will love to do it.

4. Develop a habit of reading

Leaders are readers! It is as simple as it sounds.

Who is actually still reading books today? Almost half of Americans did not read any book in 2023. That’s a pity.

Reading gives you the ability to download years into minutes!!

What do I mean by that?

It could have taken someone his whole life to find out something amazing. A skill, a trick, knowledge, etc. You can acquire that knowledge and gain insights that are super valuable by reading a book.

I can’t even tell you how many times just one book completely changed my life! I love podcasts and online courses, but sometimes reading remains the best way for me to consume new knowledge. You’re just more present and engaged while reading.

5. Get a morning routine

Almost any successful person has some morning ritual. A morning routine is a crucial practice for living a better life.

Why?

It can guarantee that you start every day strong.

A morning routine can incorporate many different practices. Like sports, reading, meditation, (cold) showering, mindful practice, meditation, and the list can go on and on.

It is important that you find a routine that fits YOU and YOUR unique life. Don’t be afraid to try out different particles.

6. Work on your social abilities

Humans are social. Training your interpersonal skills is a crucial step in your personal success.

It does not matter where you work or what you are doing in life. As long as you do not live in absolute solitude, people skills will make your life easier. They can help you get a job, build better relationships, or open new doors for you.

Social abilities include skills like emotional intelligence, active listening, training your external perspective, or public speaking.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1344" height="768" src="https://eliasbehrens.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Personal-Development-Ideas.webp" alt="Digital illustration of two people having a conversation at a café table during autumn, with warm lighting and fall foliage visible through the window.
This one might not be for everyone, but language learning can be an incredibly fun and enriching activity.

For many jobs, knowing a second language might be of great help or even required.

Bilingual people have more dense brain cells in the brain’s grey matter, which can influence academic performance, concentration, memory, communication skills, and even creativity. This means that learning a new language is very effective brain training and can benefit one’s private and professional life.

In addition to all that, it is amazing to be able to connect with people by speaking their language.

I would propose an alternative, more fun method like Olly Richards’s StoryLearing, where you learn the language passively by engaging with it. (like every child does learn it)

Good quality sleep is essential for a healthy lifestyle and your personal development.

Your body loves regular routines, especially when it comes to your day-night rhythm. I know it is tough for many, but the best tip for sleep quality is to stand up at the same time EVERY day. This routine would greatly enhance the quality of your sleep.

Sleep is the simplest and most effective form of self-care there is. Insufficient sleep leads to fatigue, irritability, or more problems in your relationships and while sleeping enough improves all these and many other aspects of mental health.

If you want to sleep better, I highly suggest you look at Matthew Walker’s work. Either watch one of the many podcasts he is featured in or even read his famous book Why We Sleep.

Let’s face it: if you do not have the discipline to keep your body in shape, how do you want to have the discipline to build your business or get the promotion you want?

A healthy body is essential for a productive life. Exercise has endless benefits: it prevents many diseases, improves mental mood, and builds confidence.

This does not have to suck; search for something that is also fun to you. Maybe play Padel with your friend, go running with a group, or if you like to be alone, practice calisthenics on your own. Try stuff until you find something that is fun and challenges you.

Aim for at least two to three times a week.

Persistence is key to personal development, and journaling helps you to be persistent. Many studies have shown that it can increase emotional well being and reduce stress.

If you have set goals for your life, you will have some short and some long-term goals you will have. Journaling helps you keep track of your progress or enables you to manage your emotional life.

It takes only 10 to 15 minutes a day.

There are many different types of journaling:

Bullet journaling

Daily journaling

Gratitude journaling

Video journaling

Reflective journaling

Pick the one that is right for you.

11. Do a 30-day dopamine fast

Dopamine fasting is a widely misunderstood term, but if used correctly, it is still extremely powerful. Created by psychiatrist Dr. Cameron Sepah, a dopamine fast refers to abstinence from specific compulsive uncontrolled behavior. Emotional eating, excessive gaming/internet use/shopping/gambling, porn/masturbation, thrill/novelty seeking, and drugs, to be exact.

What do all those behaviors have in common? They can be highly addictive and will completely off-balance your reward system. Your personal development journey is going to be extremely tough if your reward system is not in balance. You need it to push through all the hard work that’s ahead of you.

Doing the fast is simple: for a minimum of 30 days, keep away from those behaviors that you are consistently overindulging in; after the fast, make sure that your consumption/usage remains controlled.

Believe me stick to hard work becomes soo much easier once you do this.

12. Meditate daily-ish

There are many different kinds of meditation, and they do very different things for you. But most of them have one key component they all share: they require you to use and, at the same time, train your concentration abilities.

Focus can, for example, help you to gain clarity, learn way faster, or improve memory. Sadly, most people have weak focus because they are never taught how they can focus better. Meditation is the single most effective way to train your focus.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="538" src="https://eliasbehrens.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Meditaiton-is-a-radical-act-of-love-1024x538.jpg" alt="A woman sitting in cross-legged position with a singing bowl in her hand.
One of the simplest but still very effective forms of mediation is breath mediation. Sit down, ideally in a cross-legged or lotus position, set a timer for 5 to 20 minutes, and focus on your inhales, exhales, and the little breaks in between until the timer goes off.

13. Learn financial literacy

Finance is one of the key areas in everyone’s life. Gaining a deeper understanding of the financial world can make life much easier.

Financial literacy is the knowledge of the financial world. It helps you to manage your professional and personal finances through skills like budgeting, investing, and money management. It is a broad term for many things.

There are so many different financial services out there, and who should know which one to use? But if you use the right ones the right way, then you might never have to worry about money again.

There are podcasts where you can learn about personal growth on all the big media platforms like YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts.

My personal favorite right now is the Huberman Lab, a Podcast about science and science-based tools for everyday life. There are so many good ones, choose the best for you.

18. Learn to read WAY faster

We are all reading every day; as a matter of fact, you are reading right now

The average American reads about 16 minutes a day. That does not sound like too much, but that is an average, including many people who do not read at all. Chances are that if you work in an office or you read books about self-development, you read much more.

What if I told you that you could learn to double and even triple your speeding time in a matter of days!!!

Think about it. When was the last time you trained your reading skills? Probably in elementary school. That means there is much potential to be uncovered.

Learning to say no is a skill that one needs to develop. I get it; you do not want to be a jerk, but setting boundaries and learning to respect them are necessary skills to have.

It is a wonderful thing to care for others and do them favors. However, you are helping to no one if you do not take of yourself.

You need time for your personal development activities. Don’t feel ashamed to take that time.

This does not mean that you have to become a jerk. Decline in a nice way, stay polite, but hold your ground. Learning to say no can be extremely relieving.

20. Start failing (forward)

Failing Forward by John C. Maxwell is an amazing book that can definitely speed up your self-improvement.

But what is it about?

It is all about applying a positive mindset to success and failure. One key characteristic that separates many successful people from unsuccessful ones is their ability to transform failure into success.

If you want to build something, then you are guaranteed to fail at some point. So many things can go wrong in life, and you can’t control all of them.

If you fail, do not let the negative emotions take control over you. Use your self-reflection to see how you can learn from the situation and maybe bounce back even stronger.

21. Get a coach/mentor

There is no faster way to grow than with your own personal coach.

Learning on your own at your own pace is fine, but if you have a person with whom you can talk about all shit and who that gives you real-time feedback on your progress, is just insanely valuable.

There are always things that you will miss and having a second perspective can really help to identify blind spots that prevent you from progressing.

Sadly, it can be tricky to find the right coach for you since there are so many out there. Here are some tips that could help:

Ensure that he is an expert in the field

Look for reviews and testimonials

Check for qualifications; there are certificates like ICF

The most important factor is still how you are feeling in the coaching sessions. If you find a coach who makes you feel understood and who creates the right atmosphere, you are most likely with a qualified person.

22. Organize your stuff

Life is not fair; you are guaranteed a fair amount of suffering; that’s how it is.

It is easy to blame life and to say that everything is bad. Or you can take responsibility for where you are and try to live a better life. You can do this by stopping doing things that drag you down and taking opportunities to make your life better.

“How do you want to rule a city if you can not bring peace into your household?”

Bringing order into your house is the first and easiest step to taking control of your life.

23. Eat and cook healthy food

There is simply no good reason why you should not eat healthy.

Improved memory, better sleep, and reduced risk of future diseases are only a few of the many benefits of a healthy diet.

You will probably not reach your dreams if you die of a heart attack at the age of 40 or feel exhausted every day because you are just stuffing junk into your body.

Sadly, the opinions on what a healthy diet is differ a lot. But there are a few things that most experts agree on:

Limit your consumption of high-sugar food and drinks

Make sure to include enough fiber, for example, through whole grain food and veggies.

Drink enough fluids. A grown human needs about 2.4 liters or 80 ounces of fluid a day.

Look that you are getting enough proteins.

Make sure to experiment and try out many things; cooking new types of foods can be an incredibly fun and exciting adventure.

24. Start your own (mini) business

From my personal experience, I can tell that your own mini-business can give you the extra push you need to accelerate your personal growth even more.

The possibilities are endless. Everyone can start some form of business. It can be a side hustle, a fun project, or your future job.

Just as there are countless business opportunities, there are many different reasons why one might want to start their own business. Ask yourself:

Do you want to achieve financial independence?

Do you want to follow your passion?

Do you want to have control over your lifestyle and schedule?

Do you want to be your own boss and have more personal autonomy?

If you can say yes to most of those questions, chances are that a business could be the right thing for you. Do you have the courage to do it?

How can personal development benefit you?

Personal development starts with a decision. The decision that you are going to be more than you currently are. That you want to grow and live a better life and that you are willing to put in the work.

If you are looking for a quick way to improve, this is not for you. However, if you are dedicated to building yourself, then personal development is for you. It is not going to be easy; sooner or later, you will hit a wall and realize that there is a lot of work to be done.

The key is to get satisfaction from growing and getting better. If you can achieve that, then you will soon be addicted to this process, and you can’t go back to being lazy.

Final thoughts

I can not say which of those self-development activities is best or right for you. The key is striving to be your best version and focusing on your individual growth.

People who come from all kinds of backgrounds are able to achieve success and live extraordinary lives.

Everyone has dreams and a vision, but sadly, only a few ever achieve them. Many let self-doubt get in the way of being their true self. Whatever you do, never give up. Get out of your comfort zone, enhance resilience, get diverse perspectives and constructive feedback. I am sure that your personal development can lead you to unimaginable heights.

As a closing thought: There will be days where you fail yourself, where you have no motivation at all etc, don’t view those as the end, just try to make it better the next day, this is soo important or you will just start hating yourself.
